Room Planning & Decorating Kit - Children's Room

The kit allows you to design children's bedroom and play spaces in a snap with this simple space planning kit that was designed for the DIY'er.  This kit features a unique set of re-positionable bedroom furniture stickers in 1/4" scale so you can design your bedroom on paper in a few easy steps, moving the stickers around until you get it just the way you want it.  You can create a room and a design board in these 4 easy steps.

The kit comes complete with full color detailed instructions that will walk you through each of the steps to bring your bedroom space to life on paper.  Along with the furniture layout the kit includes all you need to create a designer styled trend board where you can place photos of the furniture choices, paint colors, fabric swatches and more.

Cut out photos of your favorite furniture, print pictures, cut swatches of your favorite fabrics, maybe a piece of art, lamp or even a rug.  With markers or paints you can color in the stickers to bring your vision to life.  Don't worry if you are not an artist, it is a guide that brings it together.

Space Planning & Decorating Tips for Children's Bedrooms, Play Rooms and Nurseries:

When designing a space for children, here are a few inside design tips to help make the process go a little easier and the room function the best way possible.  This kit was designed for creating nurseries, children’s bedrooms, play rooms and creative spaces.

The Inspiration: The first place to begin is with your vision of the space.

• Look for inspirational images that help you find the color, style and design vision you have for the space.
• Browse children’s picture books for color and design insight.
• Get the children involved. Find out what colors they like, where they want to sleep, if they need a chair for reading or a desk for their computer.  Gather as many ideas as possible and execute the ones that fit best into your design plan.
• Think about what you currently do not like about the space and the function and strive to change that with your new design.

The Function:  How do you see this room being used?

• Most children’s bedrooms are used for sleeping, playing, reading studying, and creative activities. Ensure that there is enough furniture and organizational tools to allow for each function.
• Will the space double as a play room or will you design a separate play space?
• Is there adequate storage or do you need room for clothing storage, toy storage, etc? Is there a closet or should you think about creating built-in storage or buying furniture that also offers storage solutions?
• Will this room be used for any other purpose such as a guest room and how can it be easily transformed?
• Bring the scale of the design down to the perspective of your child. Start the paint treatment several inches from the ceiling and include murals at the baseboards for toddlers.

 The Furniture:  Today's bedrooms are more eclectic than ever which gives you so much decorating flexibility. 

• Children’s beds come in many shapes and sizes including a variety of bunk and trundle bed options. If space is an issue consider some of these bed designs which allow you to utilize more floor space in the room.
• When two or more children are sharing a bedroom consider using twin beds. Consider mix and match bedding to give each child their own space.
• Smaller beds are easier to move, try placing a twin bed against the wall to create a daybed affect.
• To create more storage in the space move the bed away from the wall and add a divider behind the to create a lot of storage in a small amount of space.
• To create more storage and work space, look for beds that offer room for under bed storage, built in drawers for clothing and some even incorporate a desk into the bed design.
• When determining where clothes will be stored keep in mind that the space will need to grow as the child grows.
• For smaller rooms choose fewer pieces of furniture and opt for pieces that provide multiple functions such as a bench with storage or armoire for television and clothing.
• Today’s children’s room are an extension of the child and can be as creative as you can dream, mixing and matching furniture is a way to create a one of a kind space.
• When designing a multipurpose space; create different rooms with in the room such as a place for sleeping, crafting and playing and define each with its own rugs, signs, photos, etc.
• If an old kitchen table is available or found at a flea market, consider reducing the size of the legs and table top to just the right size.

Children’s Accessories & Lighting:  The finishing touches are as important to the room design as the bed and dresser.

• The accessories in a child’s space should be designed with the same respect as accessories in other spaces in the home and the scale of the pieces is important.
• Consider grouping like colors, styles or collections together to make a statement.
• Since many bedrooms also serve as spaces for young people to be creative. Include materials that can withstand paint, water, and dirt.
• To create personal art collections simply group completed art work and frame with matching frames, or  hang art with decorative clothespins from rope or ribbon, or tack with decorative hardware on an oversized cork board.
• As with an adult space, the location of lighting is important and helps define the space. A bedside lamp for reading or a light over a creative table.
• You can never have enough storage. Consider a series of baskets, buckets or bins to store toys, games and clothes. Appropriate storage solutions make clean up easier.
• Consider converting a ceiling light or fan to a small chandelier for whimsical child-like drama.
• Lamps can be embellished to make them unique and are a fantastic touch to any child’s bedroom.
• Don’t forget the ceiling during the decorating process; consider creative design details like a sky or fabric drape.
• Delineate spaces in shared bedrooms with fabric partitions.
• Adding embellishments to the fabrics, mirrors, bedding and even furniture using paint, rickrack and foam to create rooms with a one of a kind feel.
• Flea market finds are a fun addition to every room in the home, reusing materials like old chalkboards or desk chairs from schoolhouses are a great place to start.
